The Sacred Rules of Management
How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Work
by Stanley E. Smith

Rules from “Managing Your Boss”

HELP YOUR BOSS BE YOUR MANAGER.

96 Report to your boss promptly any serious
problems in any of your projects.

The timely reporting of problems is an important part of communicating with your boss, who then will have as much lead time as possible to help solve the problem. Especially avoid taking your boss by surprise when you must miss a major deadline.

Rules from “Managing Your Colleagues”

BE HELPFUL AND FAIR TO OTHERS.

107 Go to experts for needed
information.

Learn what special areas of knowledge or expertise your colleagues have, and take advantage of their knowledge when you need it. Going to an expert is usually much quicker than doing the research yourself. Naturally, you should reciprocate whenever they request similar help from you.

110 Share the credit for
accomplishments.

When others help you to accomplish a goal, acknowledge this and thank them. They will appreciate the recognition and will be all the more willing to help you again in the future. No one likes or respects someone who “hogs” the credit. For true achievers, there is enough credit to go around.
